CLOSED – Asya

CLOSED – Asya

As many may have seen, Asya (773 Laurel Street) has closed. Brown packing paper has covered the windows. The only clue as to what happened was a change of ownership notification in the window (which is no longer there) which implied that the new ownership was opening either a wine bar or gastropub (not that San Carlos doesn’t have enough places to drink!)

Although we only ate at Asya twice, I must admit I wasn’t a big fan of the place, and we were certainly not alone in that opinion given that it was nearly empty most of the time (and it’s a fairly large space). It tried to offer both Thai and Japanese food, and sometimes when a restaurant does that, it doesn’t deliver either particularly well. San Carlos has better options for both of those cuisines, and it wasn’t really a “fusion” type restaurant either.

We’ll keep our eye out on what opens in it’s place. Given its large capacity, it would need to have a pretty good appeal, so hopefully it will be able to attract more of a following.
