In what has been a difficult location for restaurants with three failures in a little over a year, a newcomer is giving 601 Old County Road – right behind the San Carlos Caltrain station – a go at it. Although it breaks from the trend of the previous three Indian restaurants, it does remain a vegetarian restaurant, although with completely different cuisine.

Delicious Crepes – also known as V&V Delicious Crepes – is a regular at a number of the Farmers’ Markets in the Bay Area, and now they are trying their first permanent location. There is certainly some overlap with the menu items at San Carlos’ other crepe restaurant, Crepe Stop on Laurel Street, but Delicious Crepes has a smaller, more curated menu with a focus on vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

The decor is fairly simple, with the space not changing much from its predecessors, with counter ordering and dozen or so tables inside and small patio with three tables outside. The service was very friendly, and they were offering samples to those walking by. The menu expands on what they served at Farmer’s Markets, with about eight savory crepe selections and the same number of sweet crepe selections. In addition, they serve coffee/espresso, soups, salads, and smoothies. They also have an all-day breakfast menu that includes avocado toast (of course), tofu scrambles, and other items.

We went with a traditional crepe batter (they also have vegan wheat and gluten-free chickpea batters), and ordered the Special Crepe, which includes spinach, tomato, onion, cheddar, and feta. It was a generous size portion, certainly enough for a whole meal or even for two people to share. Unlike most crepes that have a fairly thin filling and are folded over, this one was stuffed with the veggies – it almost ate like a burrito. The Special Crepe was very tasty and satisfying; you can tell the ingredients were fresh. We look forward to returning and trying some of their other savory selections which include ones with eggplant, mushrooms, and tofu. The sweet crepe menu is what you’d expect, with choices such as strawberry, cream, banana, chocolate, nutella, and other ingredients in various combinations.

Delicious Crepes only opened a few days ago, and although there is a large grand opening sign out front, it is handicapped by not being in a high pedestrian traffic area. So although the food certainly seems good enough for it to be a destination place for any meal of the day, it will be interesting to see if it can appeal to Caltrain riders perhaps grabbing a breakfast item before going to work or picking up dinner coming home after work. It will be nice to see this location flourish a bit more than it has in the past.
